Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, a small organ located under the liver that stores bile. The inflammation can be acute or chronic.
Causes of Cholecystitis:
1. Gallstones: The most common cause, accounting for 90% of cases. Gallstones block the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation.
2. Bile duct obstruction: Blockage of the common bile duct or other bile ducts can cause cholecystitis.
3. Infection: Bacterial infection, usually from the gut, can spread to the gallbladder.
4. Trauma: Injury to the gallbladder or surrounding area can cause inflammation.
5. Tumors: Rarely, tumors in the gallbladder or bile ducts can cause cholecystitis.
6. Other medical conditions: Certain conditions, like diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and liver disease, increase the risk of cholecystitis.
