Falsely low platelet counts, or pseudothrombocytopenia, are typically associated with the use of EDTA (which can cause platelet clumping), certain conditions like multiple myeloma, and the use of heparin. The presence of giant platelets generally does not cause pseudothrombocytopenia but rather might indicate a true thrombocytopenia or a platelet production issue.
